The Use of Ion Exchange Resin There are two general types of ion exchange resins. Cation resins exchange positive ions, and anion resins exchange negative ions. Resins are typically loaded into tanks through which municipal water or waste water is filtered, for instance, and as the exchange takes place the impurities are transferred to the resins. The resins can be chemically "cleaned" or regenerated to remove the dissolved impurities and reused with essentially no diminishment in their ability to treat water. The regeneration process can occur on site or off site at a vendor's location (called "service deionization" or "exchange deionization"). Essentially the exchange removes unwanted ions from the water while replacing them with desirable ones transferred from the resins. These resin applications are used extensively to ensure the purity and quality of water in industrial manufacturing plants, pharmaceutical operations, and even in nuclear power facilities. The unwanted magnesium and calcium ions are replaced by sodium ions. Other Valuable Applications Ion-specific resins have been developed that will preferentially remove ions such as copper, lead and cadmium. They are often used to treat wastewater from industrial processes to meet municipal sewer discharge limits or to enable recovery and reuse of wastewater. Thanks to this innovative scientific application the successful recovery and recycling of wastewater is often not only possible but also cost effective, reliable, and safe. Ion exchange is extremely valuable in situations where ultra pure water is required, such as the production of semiconductors or in scientific laboratory experiments. Ion exchange resins are also relied upon for water purification within the food and beverage industry, the mining industry, and in the industrial processing of chemicals.
